The most important thing for me is technical sparring, I always tried to do as much as possible throughout my career and think it should be the most important part of anyone’s training. – Senchai
Muay Thai is known as “King of the Ring” in kickboxing circles. These fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai training is also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities.
Class usually starts with a warm up such as skipping or shadow boxing, followed by some calisthenic exercises like push ups and sit ups. After the warm techniques are practiced with partners in drills that incorparte one-to-one drills, Thai pads, focus mitts and heavy bags. Following this the students take part in various forms of sparring in order to develop timing, range and movement.
We are associated with the Thaiboxing Association of USA under Grand Master Chai as well as Phraya Pichai Muay Thai under the guidance of Ajarn Bob Spour.
If it’s IMPORTANT to YOU then you WILL find a way. If it’s NOT you’ll find an EXCUSE.
The Combat Athletics Missions are designed to combine real martial arts kick boxing with High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT, to deliver a unique program that will see you progress to levels of physical performance that you never thought possible.
The authentic martial arts taught in the Combat Athlete Missions draws from Bruce Lee’s Jun Fan Gung Fu, Savate kick boxing, Thai boxing and even Filipino Martial Arts, to give the athlete a varied and diverse mix of different forms of kick boxing to suit all levels.
The HIIT portion of the sessions draws upon the many forms of exercise available, to provide a varied and progressive range of exercises and modifiers to allow the athlete to develop at their own pace. The format used is actually called Inverted HIIT and has a very similar time/effort protocol to actual kick boxing bouts, i.e. 2 minutes of work with 1 minute of rest (may vary).
The Missions are divided into either 8 or 10 week missions that progress the athlete through an advancing level of techniques and exercises. The training involves hitting focus mitts and and doing 1 on 1 glove drills; there is no sparring in these missions. If you are interested in sparring then the Tactical JKD-Kali program is what you are looking for.
I’m not as good as I want to be. But I’m twice as good as you think I am. – Guro Dan Inosanto
Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) sometimes called ‘Kali’ or ‘Escrima’, is a weapons-based system that teaches weaponry from the very beginning. This is contrary to other Asian systems that tend to focus on the weaponry after the student has reached a certain level of proficiency in the unarmed portion of the art. Our FMA program is based on the Inosanto Blend of Kali taught by Guro Dan Inosanto. Our two head instructors are instructors under him.
The program teaches the student the use of weaponry including single stick, double stick, stick and knife (using a training knife) and knife on its own, via drills and sparring. Over a period of time the student will become familiar with how the different weapon combinations inter-relate and how this can then be applied to empty hand techniques. The sparring is done in a safe but energetic environment and the overall training program will help your physical fitness and conditioning improve plus, your hand and eye coordination. The training is fun with a feeling of achievement and progress.
The classes are varied and usually always start with the sticks in one form or another. The beginning student will be able to borrow sticks to start with, but usually they buy their own within a few weeks of starting. MMA shorts/leggings and the club t-shirt is the usual uniform and of course bring your sticks along. As you advance you will want to buy training knives, different types of sticks, fencing mask and hockey gloves for sparring and countless other pieces of equipment that you can buy as your interest develops.
There is a grading structure for this program that will help you measure your progress and you will learn more about this as your training develops within the program.
I’m scared of failure all the time. But I’m not scared enough to stop trying. – Ronda Rousey
Mixed Martial Arts has become the fastest growing sport in the world. It combines the use of striking, grappling, wrestling, and submission techniques that make this such a diverse and dynamic combat sport and martial art experience.
Our MMA Program is affiliated with the world-famous Combat Submission Wrestling organisation headed up by world champion Erik Paulson. Our two head instructors are coaches under Erik and our program is a derivative of the CSW Program, through our affiliation.
Classes start with a basic but vigorous warm up followed by learning and drilling techniques that the student will use later when they spar and compete. After the drilling the students get a chance to spar in a variety of different ways to help develop their skill set.
Students who train long enough and show promise both in terms of skill and ability to represent the academy honourably, will get an opportunity to fight in an MMA match if they wish.
Come along to the academy to find out more and take part in your first class. Look out for our frequent beginners’ courses too. These courses are a great way to get you started.
